It’s been a rumor ever since WWE launched the WWE Network that the company would focus a show on lightweight competitors and potentially bring back the Cruiserweight division.

The Cruiserweight division is a really popular concept because of the reputation it gained from WCW’s strong roster featuring such names as Dean Malenko, Chris Jericho, Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero, and many others.

WWE brought in the Cruiserweight division in 2001 after purchasing WCW and held the WWE Cruiserweight Championship from then until 2008 when the title was deactivated with Hornswaggle as it’s final champion. It’s a shame that such a great title had to go out on such a strange note, but that may be about to change.

According to DailyWrestlingNews.com, WWE is currently working on a new WWE Network series that would focus on lightweight wrestlers in a tournament style competition over the summer of 2016.

It’s not easy to find details on this project, but the idea seems to be to produce the show in a ten man tournament filled with “unknown” wrestlers that haven’t appeared on WWE programming before and weigh less than two-hundred pounds. It could feature all independent wrestlers, or debut new stars from developmental to make their debut on that series.

It could feature all independent wrestlers, or debut new stars from developmental to make their debut on that series. For example, WWE is very high on Manny Andrade, who is also known as La Sombra, and they would like to begin his push by having him win the tournament and appear on NXT or WWE television.

There is a lot of speculation that if this series goes well, WWE could make this series a regular thing on the WWE Network to push new talent. It may even bring back the Cruiserweight division back to the WWE if it gets big enough.
